Bon è la ricorrenza buddista più importante del Giappone. Festa delle lanterne, festa dei morti, Ognissanti buddista: sono questi i diversi nomi che la indicano. Si dice che il tredici luglio (o agosto, a seconda del calendario che si segue) le anime degli antenati facciano visita ai discendenti per ricevere offerte di cibo e fiori sugli altari domestici buddisti. Poi, il quindici o il sedici, viene loro cortesemente mostrata la via del ritorno all'oltretomba.

Uno dei modi per accompagnare indietro le anime dei defunti è okuribi, che consiste nell'accendere fuochi o lanterne a illuminare la strada. A Kyoto, la sera del sedici agosto vengono eretti falò in diversi punti delle montagne, a forma di oggetti propiziatori: una barca e il tradizionale arco quadrato torii. Il fulcro della manifestazione è rappresentato dal carattere dai, che significa grande, e viene acceso sulla montagna orientale che prende nome proprio da questo fatto: Daimonji. E' spettacolare vedere l'intera cima di una montagna incendiata dall'enorme carattere dai. Tutta la città di Kyoto, gremita di turisti provenienti da ogni parte del Giappone, esce ad ammirare questa versione assolutamente straordinaria di okuribi.

Altrove, la gente segue la tradizione di accendere le candele nelle lanterne di carta e deporle sull'acqua del fiume la sera. Si pensa che le anime in visita seguano quella corrente di luci tremule e galleggianti lontano dalle città e dai paesi abitati dagli uomini, verso il mondo degli spiriti. A volte le offerte di cibo degli altari vengono avvolte in foglie di loto e affidate alla corrente, come cestino spirituale per impedire che qualche anima affamata indugi nel mondo dei vivi.

I sōmen sono un piatto squisitamente estivo. Gli spaghetti bianchi serviti in ciotole di acqua ghiacciata vengono presi e intinti in ciotole individuali di salsa. I sōmen sono associati a Bon non solo per una questione di stagione, ma anche per motivi cerimoniali: il sō di sōmen significa «semplice, non adulterato» e, nella cucina cinese, denota i piatti vegetariani o buddisti. Men significa «spaghetti».

Dato che gli spiriti degli antenati sono bravi buddisti (si pensa che tutti diventino Buddha dopo la morte), non viene mai offerta loro della carne, ma soltanto sōmen, melanzane, cetrioli e frutta come pesche, pere e cachi, che vengono collocati sugli altari come offerte votive. In alcune zone del Giappone c'è l'usanza di infilzare stuzzicadenti in piccole melanzane e cetrioli per dare loro le sembianze abbozzate di cavalli o buoi. L'idea è che questi animali possano aiutare a trasportare le anime nel loro lungo viaggio da e verso il mondo dell'oltretomba.

Chris aveva detto di arrivare al tempio presto, intorno alle cinque, prima che tutte le lanterne venissero distribuite. I monaci avevano impiegato diversi giorni a fabbricarle, ciascuno secondo la propria ispirazione, e ce n'erano davvero di tutti i tipi. Erano in maggior parte quadrangolari, fatte di carta di riso incollata a telai di legno di balsa, ma ce n'erano alcune esagonali, o a forma di barca, compresa una in equilibrio su pontoni fatti con lattine di birra.

«Che ne dici di affidare le nostre lanterne alle acque del fiume Kamo?» domandai. Avevo letto di quell'usanza, ma non vi avevo mai assistito. «Nessuno lo fa sul Kamo», rispose la okāsan. «Be', cercherò di costruire una specie di zattera con quello che c'è a casa», dissi, pensando a dei pezzi di legno che avevo visto nel capanno.

La okāsan mi diede la sua lanterna per vedere che cosa riuscivo a ricavarne.

Con puntine da disegno e spago fissai le fragili scatole di carta ai pezzi di legno, poi assicurai anche le candele in modo che non si rovesciassero, quindi, seguita dalla okāsan incuriosita dall'esperimento, raggiunsi la riva del fiume, affollata di persone che passeggiavano o sedevano sulla sponda di pietra.

La okāsan fece diversi tentativi prima di riuscire ad accendere le candele a causa della brezza fluviale.

Collocai le lanterne sull'acqua vicino alla riva, dove però rimasero a galleggiare immobili. «Ah, non funzionerà», disse la okāsan. Sollevandomi la gonna, recuperai le assi e avanzai verso il centro del fiume, dove la corrente era più rapida. Questa volta cominciarono a navigare sulle onde. Le persone sulla riva scoppiarono in un applauso. Era come se le due lanterne gareggiassero tra di loro, superandosi a vicenda. Ben presto una acquistò velocità e rimase in prima posizione.

La okāsan e io ci incamminammo lungo la riva, al passo con le lanterne. Poco prima del ponte Sanjō c'è una specie di gradino con una cascatella improvvisa, alta circa un metro. Mi resi conto che sarebbe stata la fine per le nostre lanterne, che si avviavano placide verso quel minuscolo Niagara. Ecco la ragione per cui nessuno affidava al fiume Kamo le luci per guidare gli spiriti. La prima lanterna affrontò la cascata, ma con nostra sorpresa rispuntò integra alla sua base, la candela spenta, ma ancora in piedi e galleggiante. La seconda la seguì poco dopo e riprese il placido corso, ancora accesa, fino all'ostacolo successivo verso il ponte Shijō.

La folla sulla riva era rimasta coinvolta da quel piccolo dramma e lanciò grida di giubilo vedendo che le lanterne si erano salvate. Anche la okāsan esultava come una ragazzina. Avevamo accelerato il passo, lasciandoci alle spalle le case da tè di Pontochō.

Lungo il ponte Shijō erano affacciate altre persone, che indicavano la candela accesa in navigazione (al buio non riuscivano a vedere quella spenta). Il salto del ponte Shijō era più alto del precedente, ma la okāsan e io restammo lì palpitanti, nella speranza che le lanterne potessero sopravvivere anche stavolta. Vennero polverizzate. Dal basso non affiorò neanche una scheggia di legno. Ma, conoscendo la loro finalità, vederle così inghiottite dall'acqua scura aveva un che di appagante.

...Le emozioni sembrano scorrere più forti nel mondo delle geishe. La vita di ogni essere umano è ribaltata, di tanto in tanto, dalle ondate della fortuna, ma le geishe vivono in acque più mosse di quelle di quasi tutti gli altri. La mia okāsan somiglia alle lanterne galleggianti che affidammo al fiume Kamo in quella sera di metà luglio.

"I've been a maiko or trainee geisha for three years now. None of my family were geisha, and until I was 15 I was an ordinary schoolgirl. Then one day I saw a documentary about maiko and I knew that was what I wanted to be.
I spend my days learning arts, such as Japanese traditional dance and the tea ceremony. I also attend party's at night where I entertain men and women. My make-up takes over an hour to apply. It was hard to learn at first but after three years I can almost do it in my sleep.
I wear different kimono for every occasion and a complete outfit including jewelry which costs over € 15,000. But the price can be much higher. Wearing a kimono takes a long time to get used to, they are incredibly heavy. And because of the way they are tied it's hard to move easily. They are so valuable that I worry about damaging them, or even getting them wrinkled. In my bag I always carry a fan for dancing, make-up and powder (they all come from a company called Chidoriya) But I'm not allowed to have a mobile.
I have to go to a special geisha hairdresser all the time: with my hairstyle I can't sleep on a regular pillow. In the beginning my mother showed me how to sleep on my chin, I couldn't move my head to the side! If I did it would be straight back to the hairdresser! But now I sleep on a wooden neck platform, although I only sleep more then six hours a night because of my work.
On my days off I'll go shopping with my geisha mother and litter sister -- they are just as much as my family as my real one. I can never wear just normal clothes: it'd look so strange because my hairstyle lets everyone know I'm a maiko.
I go back and see my old friends when I can, and at first we're all excited to see each other, but we're so different. They're in their third year of high school and looking to their future.

But mine is already decided, it was my dream to become a geisha!"

I don't know if people really talk like that, but the characters in Juno sure do, and it's ultra-charming.

Teenage pregnancy is the main topic here. No side quests or subplots. Just a teenager trying to figure out what to do with her baby. Abortion? Adoption? Motherhood? Surely she can't rely on the teenage father, who is clearly just a kid.

Nervously—and looking very gangly in his bright yellow headband, gym shirt, and short-short jogging shorts—he says, "You're pregnant? Just like our mothers and teachers?"

A heavy topic indeed. But it's handled so lightly that mothers will be smiling all the way through to the finish line. A happy ending indeed, Momma!

All girls must have being interested in the life of maiko at least once. Their black wareshinobu hairstyle and long and gorgeous darari obi sash are so attractive. No doubt that there are many maiko experience studio in Kyoto and they are popular. However, it is not so easy to be a real maiko in reality. There are several conditions. If you meet all of them, then you are able to be a maiko!

1. Maiko is an apprentice of professional female entertainer

It is not an ordinary job. Maiko is an apprentice who wish to be full hedge entertainer.

2. The age must be between 15 and 17

It is too late to start the training period when you finish high school (18 years old). The best timing is 15 years old.

3. The height should be shorter than 160 cm

A maiko should not be too tall. When you wear okobo (high wooden shoes), it will add another 10 cm on your height.

4. The weight must be over 43 kg

Because the maiko costume is really heavy, you have to be over 43 kg.

5. Parents' consent

Because you are under 20, you need the permission from your parents to be a maiko.

6. Fondness to traditional Japanese entertainment

You don't have to have an experience, but it is important that you have a sense of sound.

7. Fondness to Japanese life style

Everything is Japanese style: kimono, tea ceremony, flowers arrangement, ozashiki (Japanese room) manner and you have to use high wooden pillow when you go to bed. Therefore you must love Japanese style living.

8. Overwhelming patience

While you are in shikomi period (pre-training before maiko), everything must be learned: manners, washing, cleaning, shopping, other trivial things in the life and what is the most important is to learn how to speak Kyoto dialect.

9. No monthly tuition fee required

You don't have to pay for anything. Everything including living expense, lesson fee, etc. are responsible for okiya.

10. Training period

Including shikomi (pre-training before maiko) and disciple period, you have to expect to spend 4-5 years as a maiko.

These are 10 necessary conditions to be a maiko, and of course this is not everything. Another important point is if you can make a good relationship with your elder maiko and geiko. The okasan (the manager) will strictly watch you while you are in training...
